Mist and Shadow

This is my favourite scene from my favourite film. The haunting voice of Billy Boyd, the disgusting consumption of Denethor, the patriotic charge of Faramir, the silence that  follows the thwing of the bows… It tells a story more effectively than a hundred speeches could.

I also love it because it feels like one of the most Tolkien-esque scenes of Peter Jackson’s films. Here is a song which sings of loss and uncertainty as a proud man seeks to ignore the magnitude of his weaknesses.

Home is behind, the world ahead
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadow to the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight

Mist and shadow
Cloud and shade
All shall fade
All shall fade
